This course is aimed at those who have an intermediate skill set. The technique I use only requires some clay and some water, preferably with the help of an old blender. Ideally you would have several different clays to use for a range of colours.
The content in this course is focused on NATURAL clay slips, using the clays you have (or find!) to use in your surface decorations. Adding stains or oxides would be an excellent extension to make following this course, once you have these foundation skills.
Absolutely not. One of the things I love most about this technique is that it is very forgiving, and seems to lift any skill that you do have. Designs can still be very effective when simple.
Many of the tools and materials are flexible, you definitely can improvise as required.
Ideally yes. If you do not have immediate access however, that is fine. The work will keep until you are ready to fire.
This course is focused on the decorating technique of sgraffito with clay slips. Please join a beginners group or pottery club if you need help, or complete the hand building course first to learn a wide range of beginner skills.
