FAQ

  • Do I have to be experienced with clay to do this course?

This course is aimed at those who have an intermediate skill set. If you would like to know the things I have assumed you already know, I have a PDF outlining "The skills you will need' at the start of the course within the free preview. If you would like to up-skill before taking this course, I have 3 Introductory courses to get you there, available now. Head to the main home page to see which ones might suit you best.

  • What do I need to make the Clay Slip?

The technique I use only requires some clay and some water, preferably with the help of an old blender. Ideally you would have several different clays to use for a range of colours.

  • Does this course cover how to make coloured slips?

The content in this course is focused on NATURAL clay slips, using the clays you have (or find!) to use in your surface decorations. Adding stains or oxides would be an excellent extension to make following this course, once you have these foundation skills.

  • Do I have to be good at art and drawing?

Absolutely not. One of the things I love most about this technique is that it is very forgiving, and seems to lift any skill that you do have. Designs can still be very effective when simple.

  • Do I have to use the recommended products?

Many of the tools and materials are flexible, you definitely can improvise as required.

  • Do I need access to a kiln?

Ideally yes. If you do not have immediate access however, that is fine. The work will keep until you are ready to fire.

  • Do you include how to make, glaze and fire the clay pieces?

This course is focused on the decorating technique of sgraffito with clay slips. Please join a beginners group or pottery club if you need help, or complete the hand building course first to learn a wide range of beginner skills.

  • What Tools do I need for the course?

You can see the full list of items I recommend within the course 'preview'.

  • If I have already completed the 'Introducing Sgraffito' course, will I learn anything new?

Yes, definitely. This course will have a little revision, though there is certainly a lot of new information.
