Jolene's calm and collected nature came across in this very detailed and educational course. She goes through her process step by step and the course flows nicely. I have always admired her use of neutral colours and in this course she encourages to explore your artistic side. Thank you.

The clear instructions and simple demonstrations made it look so easy, but the surprise for me was that it is actually simple to use natural clay slips and sgraffito to achieve unique looks on ceramic surfaces. I love what I am able to do now with my ceramics and have already used the techniques to create a new range based on traditional Maori patterns. Slip and sgraffito can be quick flowing freestyle drawing or detailed and intricate using patterns traced onto the clay - as you like. For me personally, the joy is in freehand drawing and being able to create entirely unique pieces each time I make something, without it feeling like mass production (yawn) or taking forever to carve or paint (fun but not practical or profitable). The course is well priced to be affordable and it's a real bonus that it's always available to go back and check if I forget how to do something. It does not go into a lot of detail about preparing the clay or slips etc, so make sure you take the beginner course first, if you are new to clay. I absolutely LOVED this course and highly recommend it to anyone who aspires to make natural looking pieces with a beautiful unique hand-drawn quality to them. Thank you Joelene for sharing you precious knowledge and talent.

FAQ

  • Do I have to be experienced with clay to do this course?

This course is aimed at those who have an intermediate skill set. If you would like to know the things I have assumed you already know, I have a PDF outlining "The skills you will need' at the start of the course within the free preview. If you would like to up-skill before taking this course, I have 3 Introductory courses to get you there, available now. Head to the main home page to see which ones might suit you best.

  • If I have already done the Introducing Sgraffito Course, will I learn more in this course?

This course is an extension to the introductory class, and although there is some revision, there is a lot of new information.

  • What do I need to make the Clay Slip?

The technique I use only requires some clay and some water, preferably with the help of an old blender. Ideally you would have several different clays to use for a range of colours.

  • Does this course cover how to make coloured slips??

The content in this course is focused on NATURAL clay slips, using the clays you have (or find!) to use in your surface decorations. Adding stains or oxides would be an excellent extension to make following this course, once you have these foundation skills.

  • Do I have to be good at art and drawing?

Absolutely not. One of the things I love most about this technique is that it is very forgiving, and seems to lift any skill that you do have. Designs can still be very effective when simple.

  • Do I need access to a kiln?

Ideally yes. If you do not have immediate access however, that is fine. The work will keep until you are ready to fire.

  • Do you include how to make, glaze and fire the clay pieces?

This course is focused on the decorating technique of sgraffito with clay slips. Please join a beginners group or pottery club if you need help, or complete the hand building course first to learn a wide range of beginner skills.

  • What Tools do I need for the course?

You can see the full list of items I recommend within the course 'preview'.
